Carboneers, Ghana

Agricultural applications that bring biochar's soil and climate benefits to farming communities in West Africa, improving yields while locking carbon permanently into the ground.

Carboneers runs its Ghana project in partnership with Daps Abimbola and his company Beyond Karbon, together with the NGOs MEDA and Pronet.

The project

The project spans 1,000 farming communities across Ghana's Volta, Oti, Ashanti, Eastern and Ahafo regions. Abundant agricultural residues (corn stalks, sorghum stalks, soybean stalks and cacao pods) are converted into high-quality biochar using soil-pit and Coco Kiln pyrolysis.

Inclusivity and transparency are a cornerstone of the project. Payments to farmers and supervisors are made exclusively via mobile-money transfers, ensuring a secure and transparent financial system.

Women play a pivotal role in operations, holding the majority of positions at every level, from farmers to supervisors to management, reflecting a commitment to gender equity and community empowerment.

Carbon removal is verified by Carbon Standards International.
