Carboneers, India

Enabling smallholder farmers to repurpose bio-waste into durable biochar, preventing harmful emissions and creating a valuable soil amendment for local agriculture.

Carboneers runs its India project in partnership with Rajesh, Aarnav and Monika and their company Together for Restoration.

The project

The project operates in Odisha and Assam, engaging 7,500 farming communities to transform agricultural residues (corn stalks, bamboo trimmings, rice straw and cotton stalks) into high-quality biochar. Alongside soil-pit pyrolysis, it is advancing high-tech pyrolysis technologies to improve efficiency and scalability.

A defining feature is close collaboration with local farming-group NGOs, which unite farmers to make collective decisions that strengthen community bonds and amplify impact. Women are central to the project, making up the majority of team members at every level, from field operations to leadership. This reflects a commitment to gender equity and community-driven progress.

Through these efforts, the project improves soil health and reduces carbon emissions while empowering rural communities economically and socially, fostering resilience and sustainable development. Carbon removal is certified to Carbon Standards International, Isometric and Verra.
