Industrial-scale biochar production, demonstrating how the technology performs at full operational capacity in a Nordic setting, proving it works at scale.

PUHI is a Finnish biochar company that integrates pyrolysis into industrial side-stream flows to produce biochar, carbon removal and energy. Its first commercial plant sits in the MORE industrial park in Hämeenlinna, Finland, where the first biochar was produced in March 2024.

The company sells biochar, biochar-based carbon-removal credits and feedstock-piloting services, with activity extending into Sweden and Denmark. Its environmental permit allows it to process up to 20,000 tonnes of wood- and agriculture-based side streams each year.

How it works

PUHI runs wood- and agriculture-based side streams (wood chips, agricultural and garden residues, nutshells and industrial biomass by-products) through pyrolysis to create biochar. The biochar holds carbon in a stable form and improves soil fertility, water retention and microbial activity, while heat from the process feeds a district-heating network.

Environmental impact

  • Produces biochar that stores carbon in a stable, long-lasting form.
  • Diverts wood- and agriculture-based side streams into productive use.
  • Recovers process heat to supply a district-heating network.

Social & economic impact

  • Builds local industrial ecosystems intended to share environmental, social and economic benefits.
  • Backed by €500,000 in investment aid from Business Finland to establish biochar production in Hämeenlinna.
