Low-Carbon Travel Tips That Make a Difference
Guide · June 2026
Transport is a top-three slice of most personal footprints, and travel choices are some of the most visible. Here are the changes that genuinely move the needle — and the ones that are mostly noise.
The big levers
A few choices dominate travel emissions. Flying less — especially long-haul — is the single biggest one for frequent flyers. Taking the train instead of a plane, driving an electric vehicle instead of a petrol car, and walking or cycling short trips all stack up. The rest is mostly detail.
Plan trips with impact in mind
Favour fewer, longer trips over many short hops, choose ground transport where it is realistic, and remember that funding climate action is a complement to cutting travel, not a substitute. Estimate your travel emissions, then contribute to verified projects for what you cannot yet avoid.
