The Main Greenhouse Gases You Can Actually Reduce
Guide · June 2026
Carbon dioxide gets the headlines, but it is one of several greenhouse gases warming the planet — and some of the others are easier for you to cut than you might think. Here are the main ones, and where your choices actually move the needle.
The greenhouse gases that matter
Four gases do most of the warming. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) comes mainly from burning fossil fuels. Methane (CH₄) leaks from agriculture, landfills and natural gas. Nitrous oxide (N₂O) rises off fertilised soils. And fluorinated gases (F-gases) escape from refrigerants and industry. Each warms the planet at a different rate — methane is far more potent than CO₂ over the short term, which is why cutting it buys fast results.
Where your footprint actually sits
For most households the heavy categories are energy, transport and food — and they map onto different gases. Rather than guess, calculate your own footprint to see which gases and activities dominate for you, then aim your effort there.
